With the ASVAB test next week at Walnut Grove, students are preparing to test their strengths and potential for young adult military training.
In preparation, students at Walnut Grove High School have been taking practice tests and studying other materials. “They gave us this little packet, so that's what I’m using, and I’m just going over practice tests,” said Kiara Jackson, Junior at Walnut Grove. Although students are preparing for the test, some like Kiara have taken it in previous years. Kiara recalled, “I took it my sophomore year, and I didn't get a bad grade on it, but it's not what I needed to get into the Air Force, so I’m taking it again.” On the other hand, students like Thomas Butler, a sophomore, are taking it for the first time. Thomas lacks the experience students like Kiara have, however, he’s confident and his abilities as he reassured that “[He isn’t] nervous.” Collectively, both students want to transition into military careers. Kiara hopes to “join the Air Force” while Thomas plans to “go into the Navy.” Kiara on her second attempt wants to score a 50 or higher, and Thomas just wants—“a passing score.” The ASVAB test, also known as the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test, includes tests in 10 areas and has a max score of 99 (Military.com). It provides career information for a variety of military occupations and is an indicator of success in future career plans, such as college or a military career.
