Students at WGHS show their school spirit in preparation for homecoming
by Kelsey Edmondson and Natonya Clinger Monday: Barbie and Ken day
Monday was based on the fictional characters, Barbie and Ken, students and staff showed their spirit on Monday morning with the bright pinks and blues. “I was a baseball barbie. Before school started I got a Barbie jersey to wear to the new Barbie movie. I ended up wearing the jersey for the first day of Spirit Week. I honestly love baseball and Barbie, so it was a needed purchase. “ said Ansleigh Hester.
Tuesday: anything but a backpack day
Tuesday presented the opportunity for students to get creative with "bring anything but a backpack day". Ares Elder said, "My favorite Spirit Week theme was anything but a backpack day, and my favorite thing I saw was someone bringing in a tree. I even saw a video of the guy bringing a tree onto the bus, pretty crazy. There was a lot of school spirit, lots of people participated, even the ones who didn't wish they had, and it seemed like everyone liked it. I decided to bring a microwave to school because I love participating, and we had an extra microwave. It took a lot of convincing for my parents to allow me to bring it though. I really had no reason for the idea, just the urge to do it."
Wednesday: album cover
Mrs. Whitehurst participated in Wednesday’s theme “Album cover”. I chose Taylor Swift because I think she's incredible. Her music is the soundtrack for so many peoples' lives; if you're going through it, she probably has a song for it! I didn't have to do a ton of planning, actually. The hardest part was choosing which TS album I wanted to be! Folklore and Evermore are my favorites, so I just had to narrow it down. I found my plaid shirt on Amazon, and Mrs. Shelnutt braided my hair for me. Evermore is (currently) most relatable for me. It's an album of heartbreak, regret, longing, forgiveness, and self discovery. The way TS blends her current level of maturity with the innocence and heartbreak of adolescence really speaks to me. She's able to forgive and love past versions of herself and other people and talk about it in a way that is truly inspiring."
Thursday: dynamic duo
Thursday was dynamic duo, and it was all about getting creative and a lot of thinking with your partner in crime! Minions, Step Brothers, Mickey and Minnie, and soccer players are some of the things that the students came up with for spirit day #4. Kylie Giese was Mickey and Minnie with her friend. Kylie said she liked backpack day because of people being creative and hilarious. She mentioned that the idea was quick to mind and was simple.
Friday: blackout
The last day of spirit week before homecoming was blackout, warriors showed their pride by wearing all black to school. Zelda Peters said, “My favorite on Blackout day would probably be this girl I saw in the hall wearing this gnarly black dress and boots. I think she had some kind of goth-ish thing going on, but I'm not sure. I only caught a glimpse of her, but I know for a fact that the full fit had to have been stunning...
...I wore black under my clown suit if that counts for having school spirit. I was a clown because I thought it would be funny. Like just imagine a whole clown pullin' up to a funeral, it was a wild dude. I don't really know if there was any inspo. I just really like clowns and I've got some stuff for peak clownery. Maybe my grandpa could partly be my inspiration because he was a clown/shrink, which is pretty rad. I'd say it came out really good, but my makeup started looking kinda funky at the end of the day. Wearing glasses when in full face paint isn't very fun because it kept smudging my nose and getting on the lenses, but one must make sacrifices in the pursuit of comedy. Most of the reactions were people asking why I was a clown, taking pictures/videos, and little side comments as I walked past where they were all like, "It's a clown" or "You know it's blackout day, right?". Yes, I know what day it is, my dear fellow. I think I also spooked a couple of people."
Spirit Week for Walnut Grove students was a chance for them to come together to show pride in their school.
